Clark Many people recognize that they may have a drinking problem, but learning the various techniques and strategies to stop drinking can sometimes be overwhelming. Let's be realistic for a moment, there is no easy way to stop drinking, any alcoholic will attest to this very real fact. But any overwhelming task, including getting sober, is a lot less intimidating when broken down into organized steps. Here are some suggestions on how to get the most out of a twelve step program, and what you can do if it doesn't go quite like you planned. In order for you to have a fulfilling, healthy and addiction-free life style, start with the most basic of steps to stop drinking. Tips 1. There's an enormous amount of information on the web for organizations such as Alcoholics Anonymous. The website should point you to lists of meetings in your area. Just do a Google search. 2. In order for you to stay sober, you must plan for it. Attend a variety of meetings always remembering to stay clear of all mood-altering substances. 3. Get a sponsor-someone of your gender with significant clean time. They will Know the many pitfalls you are sure to encounter. Talk to him or her daily following the advice given. Whenever the urge to relapse starts, call your sponsor. 4. Work the 12 steps with your sponsor. They are a recipe for continued success in life and will insure the easiest way to stop drinking on a continuous basis. 5. Be mindful that at first you will feel very uncomfortable in social settings. This is quite normal and also quite temporary. In time you'll outgrow those awkward feelings. 6. Be careful not to substitute one addiction for another such as food, shopping, sex etc. There are 12-step programs for these as well. In closing, remember that addiction is life threatening. The alternatives to sobriety are correctional facilities, mental institutions, and untimely death. You have within you the power to stop drinking and live a productive life.
